2nd Meeting
2001 Summer Solstice
Warm Welcome to 2001 Summer Solstice Meeting
Astronomical Cultures, Solstice 2001.
During three days, 21st, 22nd y
23rd of june 2001, the Parque Etnográfico Pirámides de Güímar, hosted the
dissertation of engineer Mr.
Robert Bauval and astronomer Mr.
Chandra
Wickramasinghe, that got together in Tenerife to propose their interesting and
daring points of view about Ancient Egypt in the meeting "Solsticio 2001",
organized by the radio program "Esencia de Medianoche" and magazine "Más Allá"
The main points of the meeting were the persistence nowadays of an astronomical
tradition born during the Pharaohs era, or the determinant influence that
meteorites could affect to the course of the history and the civilizations.
Unfortunately Javier Sierra, director of the meeting, could not assist due to a
health problem.
Sacred Tradition
Robert Bauval started his
conference with a review of his world wide known investigations between the
pyramids in Gizeh and the Orion constellation. He introduced his new book in
Spain: "The Secret Chamber", and revealed for the first time what is the center
of his investigations during the last five years: the continuity and permanency
in our days of the same principles that moved the Egyptians to align their
buildings to certain stars.
To Bauval, a sacred thousand-year-old tradition exists, by means of which it is
possible to understand that cities as Paris, Rome or Washington, were designed
to look similar to Egyptian enclaves as Luxor's city, or continuing the
alignments of monuments as the big pyramids of Gizeh's plateau. The Sirius star,
that ancient Egyptians identified as Isis and constellations like Orion, made
such an influence in the religion of Pharaohs that they aligned their temples
towards them, creating a model who later would be applied in diverse places of
the world until present days, trying to create macro talismans.
The meetings about the solstice were surrounded by a wide photographic exhibition about pyramids of the world, as well as a communication about the main archaeological and historical questions of Canaries, in both cases presented by the team of investigation of Essence of Midnight (Esencia de Medianoche).
The Meteorites in the History
Besides, the participation of Dr. Chandra Wickramasinghe was
undoubtedly very important. Teacher of Applied Mathematics and Astronomy in
Cardiff's university, , Wickramasinghe and astronomer
Fred Hoyle
created the
theory of "Panspermia",
about the origin of life on Earth, with several hundreds of scientific articles,
more than 40 published books and dozens of academic distinctions for his
scientific work.
All an authority in the whole world in the study of the comets, who surprised to the hearing with a hypothesis according to which the history of the planet and of the humanity has been marked by the impact of meteorites, which bombardment on the Earth has caused changes of course in the evolution of the life and of the cultures.
The big Egyptian pyramids, in his opinion, could have arisen as a response to a period in which Egypt was harassed by the frequent fall of meteorites, a phenomenon from which the Egyptians sought to protect themselves by means of the pyramids, so much physically as refuge for the Pharaohs, thanks to the particularities of its structure, as of a symbolic form of invoking their gods.
His hypothesis rested on
astronomic studies on the fall of meteorites on the period in which it is
supposed that the pyramids were constructed, in archaeological finds of pieces
elaborated with meteorites, some of which were adored, as well as by means of
geological analyses and vegetable rings (specially trees) that proof that around
2.200 B. C., there was a period of the little or no growth that probably might
have its origin in the effects caused by rains of meteorites.
